In 2024, its 20th founding year, the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra looks back on the development of the specific praxis of Instant Composition Conducting, which focuses on absolute ad hoc creation by the ensemble and the conductor, as well as constantly changing concert line-ups with up to several new participants. With dense, narratively stringent pieces of music lasting 30-50 minutes, the VIO has fascinated audiences at the legendary Moers Festival (GER), the renowned Wien Modern Festival (AT), as well as in the contexts of jazz and visual arts, a.o.. Founded in 2004 by Michael Fischer, the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra is one of the earliest and continuously working improvisation orchestras worldwide. VIO’s 20th anniversary is celebrated with concerts a.o. at the Klima Biennale Wien Festival, at Vienna’s institution for Jazz, the Porgy&Bess, or at the contemporary theatre for performance, the Brut Wien.
